Resistors are small electrical components used in multiple electrical and electronic circuits to limit the flow of current within the circuit and to regenerate voltage drops in a variety of ways. They come in different sizes and shapes. Each resistor includes resistance or resistance values ranging from ohms to milliohm. So these values can be measured by the concept of ribbon. The Role OF The Resistor Ribbon

Each resistor has a different color band on it, indicating resistance. This was invented by the RMA (Radio Manufacturers Association) in the 1920s. The power rating of all resistors can be marked with a ribbon of up to 1 watt. The ribbon on the resistor specifies the resistance value, tolerance (and sometimes failure rate), or reliability. The resistance bands range from 3 to 6, where the first two bands specify the resistance value and the third band is the multiplier.

Three-Band Resistor Color Code

Three-band color codes are rarely used.

The first band on the left represents the first significant number of resistance.

The second band represents the second significant number.

The third band represents the multiplier.

The tolerance of the three-band resistance is generally 20%.

The color code table corresponding to the three-band resistance is shown below.

For example, if the colors on the resistor are yellow, purple, and red from left to right, the resistance can be calculated as

47×102±20%. This is 4.7 KΩ± 20%.

This means that the resistance value is between 3760Ω and 5640Ω.

Four-Band Resistor Color Code

The four-band color code is the most common representation in resistors.

The first two bands on the left are used to indicate the first and second significant digits of the resistance.

The third band is used to indicate the multiplier.

The fourth band is used to indicate tolerances.

There is a big gap between the third and fourth bands. This gap helps to solve the reading direction. The color code table of the four-band resistor is shown below.

For example, if the colors on a four-band resistor are arranged in the order of green, black, red, and yellow, the resistance value is calculated as 50 * 104± 2% = 500 kω ± 2%.

Color Code For Five-Band Resistors

High precision resistors have an additional band that indicates the third effective value of the resistance. The remaining bands represent the same as the four-band color code.

The first three bands are used to indicate the first three important values of resistance.

The fourth and fifth bands represent multipliers and tolerances, respectively.

There is an exception when the fourth band is gold or silver. In this case, the first two bands represent two significant digits of the resistance.

The third band represents the multiplier, the fourth band represents the tolerance, and the fifth band represents the temperature coefficient in ppm/K. The color code table of the five band resistors is shown below.

For example, if the colors on a five-band resistor are arranged in the order of red, blue, black, orange, and gray, the resistance value is calculated as 260×103± 0.05 = 260 KΩ ± 0.05%.

Six-Band Resistor Color Code

In the case of high precision resistors, there is an additional band indicating the temperature coefficient.

The rest of the frequency band is the same as the five-band resistor.

The most commonly used color for Band 6 is black, representing 100ppm/K.

This indicates that for a temperature change of 100 degrees, the resistance value may change by 0.1%.

Usually the sixth band represents the temperature coefficient. But in some cases, it may represent reliability and failure rates.

For example, if the color order of a six-band resistor is orange, green, white, blue, gold, and black, the resistance is calculated as 359 ×106± 5% 100 ppm/K = 359MΩ± 5% 100 ppm/K.

Common Questions About Resistor Color Codes:

How do I tell which end to start reading the resistor?

- For many resistors, some of the color rings are more closely spaced or concentrated at one end. Hold the resistor in your hand so that these clustered color rings are on the left side. The resistor information is then read from left to right.

- The leftmost part of the resistor can never be a metallic color ring. If the color ring at one end of the resistor is gold or silver, the resistance tolerance is 5% or 10%. The resistor is placed so that the color ring is on the right, and again, the resistor's information is read from left to right.

- Common resistors range from 0.1 ohm to 10 megohm. It follows that the third color ring of a four-ring resistor is always blue (106) or a color representing a lower value, while the fourth color ring of a five-ring resistor is always green (105) or a color representing a lower value.
