MAF Sensors Or Air Flow Sensors: Operation, Faults And Solutions

MAF refers to air flow sensor, also known as air flow meter. The air flow sensor is one of the important sensors of the automobile EFI engine, because the air flow inhaled by the engine during operation determines the fuel injection amount of the engine, and the inhaled air flow is an important basis for the fuel injection amount. If the air flow sensor fails, the driving computer cannot get an accurate signal and cannot control the fuel injection normally.


Logic OF The MAF Sensor

MAF sensors, abbreviated to "Air Mass Flow", also known as air flow sensors, are located in all vehicles before the engine intake manifold and after the air filter. We say that its role is very important, 

that is, this element is responsible for measuring how much air the engine inhales at any time through an electrical signal that "communicates" to the switchboard, which collects all the parameters and information of the engine.


The air flowmeter has a thin platinum wire inside (like some spark plugs), also known as a "hot wire", that is, the engine is running at Kalitana up to 200 degrees, and must maintain a constant temperature.

 Depending on whether the engine receives more or less air, the temperature will tend to drop more or less due to the cooling caused by the airflow (the greater the amount of air, the greater the cooling).


Since the platinum wire must be at a constant temperature, it will require more current to stay at 200 degrees. The current you need at all times is processed by the associated university, so electronic management already knows how cold the hotline is


You must have thought that the platinum thread would get cooler more or less depending on the temperature and not just because of the quantity. You're right, but for that our car has an intake temperature sensor. 

Finally, UCE calculates these and many other data (such as atmospheric pressure) to get a perfect and instant idea of the amount of oxygen reaching the intake of our engine.

How To Clean A MAF Sensor

If we detect any anomalies and we know through diagnostics that the fault is coming from this device, we will visually check the different connections before disassembly. 

We will check the status of the cables, usually three, as well as the connectors themselves. If at first glance everything seems to be in order, then the inside of the sensor is probably contaminated, dirty beyond our comprehension.


Over time and kilometers the sensor may capture dirt and not transmit the right information, so it will not perform its function well. While the intake loop has an air filter before the MAF, 

there is a chance that some small elements "sneak in" and stay on the hot wire, as well as dirt, insects, or oil particles. 

When the values are recorded beyond the established parameters, it is likely that the engine in the frame of the alarm light will fail, and our car will also lose power.

How Do I Detect IF The MAF Sensor Is Faulty

If the error persists after we have placed everything as it is, then the last action we can perform in a relatively simple way through our own means is to perform an electrical check on the connector using a multimeter or multimeter.

 In addition to having this device, it will also be important to have electrical diagrams to understand the function of each cable.


Keep in mind that for these checks, we must at least activate the contact, and depending on the model, we can find three, four or five cables. Logically, we have to plug in the connector.


First we will check that, with one end of the multimeter, Pierce the B+ terminal (power supply) and ground the other end if the sensor is energized. To do this, we place the tester in the voltage measurement position (volts). 

Depending on the model, it will give us one voltage or the other, but usually it will not be below 5 volts, and in any case we will not receive a voltage higher than the battery voltage. If the multimeter records a value between this margin, we will proceed to the next check.


Then we will verify that the circuit is grounded. We put the multimeter in the on-position. First, if it beeps, let's try to connect the two metal tips of the tester, so we make sure the device's buzzer works and sometimes fails. 

With one end of the device we will click the ground terminal and another in some mass or metal parts we usually find around the engine compartment. If the dough is correct, the device should beep.


The third and final check we can do is the signal measurement, although in this case we have to start the vehicle and another person will have to help us. We put the multimeter in the voltage position and we have another one in the signal terminal y with the mass.

 If the multimeter screen shows us the voltage value, we will have to ask the other side to slowly accelerate the motor. If the signal is correct it should increase as the engine speed increases. 

To make a short summary of the engine, we can say that the MAF sensor or mass air flow sensor is responsible for measuring the amount of air reaching the inside of our cylinder, 

measuring it through the resistance. If we detect a fault from the sensor, we will try to disassemble it carefully and clean it internally and be very careful. If the fault persists, 

we can perform some electrical checks to determine the cause of the electrical fault, although we will have to help ourselves with a multimeter

Symptoms OF MAF Sensor Failure

When the MAF sensor fails, the engine control system may not be able to accurately calculate and adjust the fuel supply, leading to a range of problems and symptoms. Here are some possible manifestations:


1. Engine power decline: If the MAF sensor fails, it may lead to unstable engine power, slow or even unable to speed up, affecting the normal running of the vehicle.


2. Unstable idle speed: The failure of the MAF sensor may also lead to unstable idle speed, and the engine may have problems such as acceleration lag and engine jitter.


3. Decreased fuel economy: Due to inaccurate measurement of air flow, the ECU may not be able to accurately adjust fuel supply. This can result in reduced fuel economy and reduced vehicle mileage.


4. Increased emissions: MAF sensor failure may cause the engine to burn inadequately and produce more pollutants, resulting in increased exhaust emissions that do not meet emission standards.
